Layered Crochet Flower: How to Make a Beautiful Rolled Rose

Elie Avatar

A layered crochet flower is two small pieces stacked into one bloom: a flat white flower with 5 treble crochet petals underneath, and a pink rose rolled from a single ruffled strip glued into its centre. Neither piece takes long, and the pair looks far more finished than either does alone.

This free layered crochet flower pattern is written out step by step from a video tutorial by Magic crochet (credited in full at the end). The stitch names and counts come from the labels printed on screen, and each of the 17 steps has its own photo taken from the tutorial. If you can chain, work double crochet and work treble crochet, you can make it in one sitting.

What you need for this layered crochet flower

The kit is small. Everything below is either stated in the video or visible in it.

ItemWhat the tutorial usesNote
YarnAcrylic yarn in cream and pinkAcrylic is stated in the video description. Weight and brand are not given
Hook3 mmStated in the description and printed on the hook in the video
GlueHot glue gunShown rolling the rose and fixing it to the base
ToolsScissors, yarn needleListed in the description for finishing the ends
Finished sizeNot statedRoughly palm-sized in the video, but no measurement is given

The video does not give a yarn weight, a yardage or a gauge, so this page gives none. Both pieces use very little yarn, which makes the layered crochet flower a good way to use up small leftover balls in two colours.

Stitches and abbreviations

Crochet has two naming conventions for the same stitches. The main names below match the tutorial’s labels. If you learned the other convention, shift each name one step taller.

Slip stitchsl stSlip stitchJoining the ring and anchoring loops
Double crochetdcTreble (tr)Round 1 and the rose strip
Treble crochettrDouble treble (dtr)The petals

The chain 3 at the start of round 1 stands in for the first double crochet, and the chain 4 at the start of each petal stands in for a treble. That is why the counts in this layered crochet flower include them.

There is no stitch multiple to worry about. The base is worked in the round from a fixed count, and the rose strip takes 2 double crochet in every chain, so it works with any chain length if you want a bigger or smaller rose.

Layered crochet flower chart

Every count here is read from the on-screen labels. Where a total is worked out rather than printed, it says derived.

PartWhat you workCount
Ring6 ch, sl st to join6 ch (stated)
Round 13 ch, 15 dc into the ring, sl st to join16 stitches (derived)
Round 25 ch, sl st in the 3rd stitch along, around5 loops (stated)

The rose total is simple arithmetic: 40 chains minus the 3 you skip at the start leaves 37 chains, and 2 dc in each gives 74.

How to crochet a layered crochet flower, step by step

The tutorial works the white base first, then the pink rose, then puts them together. The steps follow the same order.

Step 1: Chain 6

With the cream yarn and the 3 mm hook, make a slip knot and chain 6. This short chain becomes the centre ring of the base flower.

Step 1: chain 6 in cream yarn.

Step 2: Join the ring and chain 3

Slip stitch into the first chain to close the 6 chains into a ring. Then chain 3. These 3 chains count as the first double crochet of round 1.

Step 2: join the ring, then chain 3.

Step 3: Work 15 double crochet into the ring

Work 15 double crochet into the centre of the ring, not into the chains themselves. Slip stitch into the top of the chain 3 to join. With the chain 3 counted in, round 1 has 16 stitches. Keep them pushed together so the ring closes neatly around the hole in the middle.

Step 3: 15 dc into the ring makes a small flat disc.

Step 4: Chain 5 for the first loop

Chain 5. This chain becomes the first of the loops that hold the petals, so do not pull it tight.

Step 4: chain 5 for the first loop.

Step 5: Slip stitch into the 3rd stitch

Count along round 1 and slip stitch into the 3rd stitch. That anchors the loop. Repeat the chain 5 and slip stitch all the way around.

Step 5: slip stitch in the 3rd stitch to anchor the loop.

Step 6: Finish with 5 loops

The tutorial marks the end of this round with the number 5, so you should have 5 chain loops around the disc. Round 1 has 16 stitches, which does not divide exactly by 3, so the spacing is close to even rather than perfect. Place the last loop by eye; the petals cover the difference.

Step 6: 5 loops around the centre, ready for the petals.

Step 7: Chain 4 to start the first petal

Move into the first loop and chain 4. The chain 4 stands as the first treble and forms one side of the petal.

Step 7: chain 4 to start the petal.

Step 8: Work 5 treble crochet into the loop

Work 5 treble crochet into the same loop. For each one, yarn over twice, insert the hook into the loop, pull up a loop, and then work off the loops 2 at a time. Keep the trebles fanned out along the loop.

Step 9: Chain 4 and slip stitch to close the petal

Chain 4 for the other side of the petal, then slip stitch into the base to close it, as the video does. The two chain 4 sides frame the 5 trebles and give the petal its rounded shape.

Step 9: chain 4, then slip stitch to close the petal.

Step 10: Repeat for 5 petals

Work the same sequence into each of the other 4 loops: chain 4, 5 treble crochet, chain 4, slip stitch. Fasten off and weave in the ends with the yarn needle. The white base of the layered crochet flower is now done.

Step 11: Chain 40 in pink

Switch to the pink yarn and chain 40. This is the whole rose, so count carefully: a longer chain makes a fuller rose, and a shorter one a smaller bud.

Step 11: chain 40 in pink.

Step 12: 2 double crochet in the 4th chain from the hook

Skip the first 3 chains and work 2 double crochet into the 4th chain from the hook.

Step 12: 2 dc in the 4th chain from the hook.

Step 13: 2 double crochet in every chain

Keep working 2 double crochet into every chain to the end. The label on screen reads “2 dc/all”. That is 37 chains and 74 double crochet in all. The doubling is what makes the strip twist and ruffle.

Step 13: 2 dc in every chain until the end.

Step 14: Let the strip spiral

At the end, fasten off and leave a tail. The finished strip curls into a corkscrew on its own. Do not flatten it: the curl is what turns into the rose.

Step 15: Roll the rose from one end

Start at the narrow end and roll the strip around itself, keeping the bottom edge level. The first few turns make a tight bud in the centre.

Step 15: roll from one end to form the bud.

Step 16: Glue as you roll

The tutorial uses a hot glue gun, adding a little glue along the bottom edge every turn or two. Keep rolling until the whole strip is used, then press the base flat. If you prefer not to use glue, a few stitches through the base with the yarn needle will hold the rolls instead.

Step 17: Glue the rose onto the base

Where a layered crochet flower goes wrong

Three problems cause most of the trouble.

  • The centre hole is too big. The 15 double crochet were spread along the ring instead of pushed together. Keep them tight, or pull the starting tail to close the hole.
  • The petals flop or curl. Loops that are too tight squash the 5 trebles. Keep the chain 5 relaxed, and check each petal has chain 4, 5 treble crochet, chain 4.
  • The rose looks flat. The strip was pressed flat before rolling, or the rolls sit at different heights. Roll with the bottom edge level and let the ruffle stand up.

Hook and yarn for a layered crochet flower

On the Craft Yarn Council yarn weight chart, a 3 mm hook falls in the crochet hook range for category 1 (super fine) yarn, 2.25 to 3.5 mm. Category 2 (fine) runs 3.5 to 4.5 mm and category 3 (light) 4.5 to 5.5 mm. The video does not name a yarn weight, only acrylic. A thin yarn on a 3 mm hook gives firm petals that hold their shape, which matters here because the petals are unsupported trebles. A thicker yarn and a bigger hook will make a bigger layered crochet flower with the same counts.

Two colours matter more than the exact yarn. The tutorial pairs cream with bright pink, so the rose stands out against the petals.

Ways to use a layered crochet flower

The video title calls it a bouquet idea, and that is the obvious use: make several in different colours and group them. The flower also works as an appliquรฉ on a bag or a hat, a brooch with a pin glued to the back, or a gift topper.

One safety point. A glued flower has small parts, so do not give it to a child under 3 as a toy.

Frequently asked questions

What hook does this layered crochet flower use?

A 3 mm hook. The size is stated in the video description and printed on the hook shown in the tutorial.

How many petals does the base flower have?

Five. Round 2 makes 5 chain loops, and each loop holds one petal of chain 4, 5 treble crochet and chain 4.

How many chains do I need for the rose?

40 chains. You then work 2 double crochet into the 4th chain from the hook and every chain after it, which comes to 74 double crochet.

Is this layered crochet flower beginner friendly?

Yes, if you can work double and treble crochet. There are no increases to count and the rose is a single row.

Can I make it without a glue gun?

Yes. Sew through the base of the rose with a yarn needle after every turn or two, then sew the rose onto the white flower. The tutorial uses hot glue, but stitching holds just as well.

How big is the finished layered crochet flower?

The tutorial does not give a measurement. It is roughly palm-sized in the video, but that depends on your yarn and hook.
